Editorial: New fieldhouse is a big win for the valley

Another sign of the Grand Valley’s coming of age is the addition of a facility dedicated to youth sports.

Supporters of the Blackout Sports Fieldhouse have identified a hole in the community’s civic offerings. Once filled, it will provide an array of benefits — from strengthening the valley’s competitive footing in the sports realm statewide to sprinkling in some economic activity as a destination for out-of-towners visiting for tournaments. Top Out Ceremony

Community members and construction workers gathered Tuesday to celebrate a milestone in their mission to grow athletic opportunities for budding Mesa County athletes.

The project team behind Blackout Sports Fieldhouse, at 715 23 ½ Rd., near Community Hospital, held a “topping off ceremony” where they signed and affixed the final beam of the building’s frame.

Groundbreaking

Tuesday marked the beginning of a community effort to transform an empty 10-acre lot into a sports complex that will fulfill a longstanding lack of space for local youth tournaments and clubs.

“My wife and I moved here in the year 2001, and I quickly realized that this area really lacked opportunities for youth to do sports,” said Dean Havlik, the founder and president of Grand Junction Blackout. “I really wanted to give our youth some more opportunities.”
